How to Play

How to play in a play-by-blog format:
  1. I will start by posting a new mission situation (article), including any maps or graphics for the area you are in. I will also post to the "Vitals" tab with an information showing each of your vital signs (hp, conditions, etc).
  2. After I post, you can then respond using the comments. Tell me what you're doing, what you're character is saying, and even feel free to delve into your character's thoughts. Be sure to check that Vitals tab; you're responsible for keeping an eye on your health!
  3. I may respond to your post with a comment of my own, giving you feedback.
  4. At a certain point, I will post a fresh new main article. You then post your comment to the current article, NEVER to the old ones (unless you are wrapping up a conversation).
  5. I will update the adventure every weekday at 4:00 Eastern Time.  That way everyone has through their lunch hour of the day after an update is posted to take any actions and make posts.  I will answer questions and clarify things whenever needed.  Also, if everyone's actions are in, say for combat, and I have the time, I will go ahead and advance things early.  On weekends, I will not update scenarios unless everyone's actions are in.
Writing Style:
  1. Write from a third-person perspective, present tense. Example: Salah says, "Asps. Very Dangerous. You go first," and he nudges Indy to proceed into the chamber.
  2. Private questions can be sent to my email address.
  3. For "out of character" (OOC) chatter, precede your comment with "OOC:"
Actions, Dice Rolling and Battle:
  • When you post your character doing an action, feel free to add a "Tech" section at the end.   Example: "Time to take out the leader. Knuckles stays in cover behind the brick wall and takes a carefully aimed shot at Hauptmann Steiner's head." Tech: Shooting D8, Aim +2, Called Shot Head -4, will use a benny to reroll a failure.
  • To avoid confusion, when we are in combat, when you have finished stating your actions put the word FINAL at the end of your post.  That way I can tell if everyone is ready early and I can resolve combat.
  • To save time, when describing your action, describe alternatives actions as well.  Example:  Crusher is going to fire a burst into the Nazi Commander.  If the Commander is already down, he will fire at the closest opponent not engaged in melee."
  • I will roll all dice.
  • As you learn the Savage Worlds system, start working on a Combat SOP for your character to help speed things up, such as "I will always expend at least one benny to soak damage."  This way when I am allocating damage in combat, we can save ourselves a response or two.
  • Note on money: To keep things simple, we will use $US as the denomination of choice no matter where the characters are.  We will also use current costs for things with some common sense applied.  We do not want to be guessing what the buying power of the deutschmark was vs the pound in 1939 and then matching that to the 1939 price of a good.  Using today's rates makes things like bribes easy to calculate as you know $5 isn't much and $500 is substantial without looking anything up.
Be an Active Participant:
  • Players who fail to post in a timely way will eventually have their agents killed off in gruesome and very unfair ways.  Let the group know if there are problems with getting online or posting.  I only expect people to check and post on (non-holiday) weekdays, but there is nothing stopping you from posting and chatting with your team on those days.
Examples: These are both D&D play-by-blog campaigns.
  • Weekly Grind 4e: This is a weekly dungeon delve.  Each week they get a new room to explore in the dungeon.
    • Intro: Some background on the Grind 4e campaign.
  • Ruins of Empire: This is a play-by-comment campaign that uses the microlite74 rules (a set of retroclone rules) to play online.  This has just begun.  This was the inspiration for the Group 17 play-by-blog campaign and it was inspired by Weekly Grind.
